On top of the drought (which, in reality, stretches back to 2008),
geologists have discovered relatively high levels of Helium-3 in gas from around a 30-mile stretch of the Newport-Inglewood Fault Zone in the Los Angeles Basin. Because Helium 3 is only found in the
Earth's mantle, it indicates that the fault is far deeper than previously believed. This indicates that an earthquake along this fault could be more severe than prior estimates.
