Think Twice About An SBR

With the tax on SBR's dropping to zero in January, a lot of people are probably considering converting their rifle or handgun to an SBR. But in his article, "Free SBRs Are Coming! A Horrible Idea," Aaron Goodfellow warns that you might want to rethink you plans. The point he raises is that there are still a lot of legal restrictions involved with converting an existing rifle or handgun to a short-barrelled rifle, not the least is you still must submit the paperwork and fingerprints to the ATF, you have restrictions on interstate travel, the weapon is locked into the configuration (including caliber) that you register it as, there are limitations on letting others use the firearm, and it is pretty much permanent--if you change your mind, you cannot "un-SBR" the weapon. There are additional considerations as well which he covers in his article.

  1. Yeah, wake me up when the NFA, ATF et al are gone. Stick with rifle caliber pistol in the mean time.
