Declining Support for Israel's Actions in Gaza

The New York Post reports: "Most Americans now disapprove of Israel’s military action in Gaza new poll reveals as tensions rise between allies." The article states that "[a] Gallup survey released Wednesday found that 55% of US adults disapprove of the Jewish state’s actions in Gaza while just 36% approve — a dramatic turnaround from November, when 50% approved of Israeli action in Gaza while 45% disapproved in the immediate aftermath of Hamas’ Oct. 7 terror attack." Some other points:

  • "Wednesday’s poll found that just 18% of self-identified Democrats approved of Israeli action in Gaza, down from 36% in November, while 75% disapproved."
  • "Pro-Israel feeling has also waned among self-identified Republicans, with 64% approving of the military response (down from 71% in November) and 30% disapproving."
  • "Fewer than three in 10 self-described independents approve of Israel’s actions, while 60% say they disapprove."
While support was higher among those people who claimed to be following the conflict closely (43% supporting Israel), it is still less than half.

The lack of support among Democrats is easy to explain as the result of decades of propaganda from liberals vilifying the West as racist and colonizers. It is very easy to take that narrative and replace Western settlement of North America and alleged maltreatment of American Indians with Jewish settlement of Palestine and maltreatment of the Palestinians; or Germany's quest for lebensraum in WWII with the present actions of Israel to conquer and settle more and more Palestinian lands.

The falling support among conservatives is a little harder to explain and may be for several reasons including, but not limited to, a growing dislike of foreign entanglements and providing financial support to other countries (something we see going on in relation to funding for Ukraine) and a growing indifference about the Israeli-Palestinian conflicts (i.e., "not our problem")--in other words, a resurgence of isolationism. Plus decades of Jewish disdain for Evangelical Christians (Israel's strongest supporters) might finally be taking its toll.

    1. For the war or Netanyahu's handling of the war? I see there have been increasing dissatisfaction with his failure to get the hostages back.
