Refugees Welcome: New York Edition

Rick Moran notes that "New York City to Cut Up to 15% of Its Budget to Pay for Migrant Influx." From his article:

New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced that because of the huge influx of asylum seekers into the city and the lack of help from Albany and Washington, he’s been forced to ask for a 5% reduction in spending from all city departments. And if no help is forthcoming, he says he’ll have to ask for another 5% reduction in January and another 5% next March.

Adams says the migrants will cost the city up to $12 billion over the next three years. Without state and federal funds, they will “destroy New York City,” he proclaimed earlier in the week.

Frankly, it’s hard to tell if Adams is just trying to put pressure on his friend Joe Biden and his enemy Gov. Kathy Hochul, or if he’s serious about cutting billions in city services.

I know that Adams is trying to threaten the rest of the country, but I can't think of a reason why I or anyone outside of New York should care. Frankly, it is time for some tough love when it comes to liberals. I can remember when New York nearly went bankrupt in the 1970s and while the federal government ultimately bailed them out, it was enough of a lesson that New York actually got tough on crime and cleaning up the place. But like a dog returning to its vomit, they returned to the heady days of the high crime and disfunction of the 1970s, even declaring them a sanctuary city in defiance of the rest of the country. So let them provide sanctuary to their migrants and enjoy it.

In other news, the New York Post reports that "NY lawmaker wants to bar counties from blocking migrants to ease burden on NYC."

A Queens lawmaker has introduced legislation to spread the burden of dealing with the migrant crisis across New York State, as the Big Apple continues to struggle to handle the influx of asylum seekers.

In one of the bills put forward by Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar in Albany Thursday, local governments would be barred from blocking asylum seekers from being housed in their counties through emergency orders.

The state lawmaker, who is an ally of Mayor Eric Adams, also proposed creating a statewide coordinator for migrants to oversee the intake and care of the asylum seekers once they reach the state.

“It is time for New York State to lead a Statewide response as New York City faces one of the greatest humanitarian crises in its history,” Rajkumar said.

“The State must enlist all its counties to help New York City shelter migrants, because the strength of our entire State depends on New York City continuing to be a strong economic engine.”

She's wrong. As we have been told over and over by our betters, the economic benefits of illegal immigration outweigh it costs. Thus, New York will be a larger, stronger economic engine if it is forced to keep all the illegal aliens and refugees that can be shipped there. Plus think how much better liberal New Yorkers will feel about themselves if they can help all these people. It would be extremely selfish of other cities and towns to take migrants from New York City. And, frankly, President Biden should be ashamed of economically weakening blue states by his plan to force migrants to wear ankle bracelets to make sure that they stay in Texas. The blue states have the worst economic growth and, for that reason, are most in need of a flood of illegal aliens and refugees.
