A couple videos on mountain lion (aka cougar) encounters. The first video is by Les Stroud and goes over what to do if you should encounter a mountain lion, including if one starts stalking you. Being Les Stroud, it is premised on your not having a weapon or not using a weapon. His basic advice, if the lion becomes aware of you, is to act big, confident, and scary.
The second video is a recording of an actual encounter with a mountain lion by a hiker or runner in Utah, where he is not exactly what I would consider acting big, confident, and scary. But at least he had the sense to not turn his back on the animal or try and run away. Fortunately, the cougar seemed more concerned with just moving the man along and out of its territory than in attacking him.
