Americans Now Own More Than 530 Million Firearms

Shooting News Weekly notes that Americans now own more than 530 million firearms. With the current population of the United States sitting at 340 million, that means that is 1.56 firearms per person. Gun ownership is not distributed evenly, though. Only about 40% of households have firearms. Firearm ownership is much more prevalent among those living in rural areas, Republicans, men, and whites.  And the vast majority of gun owners (72%) own a firearm for self-defense.

  1. It would be higher if the government surplussed its firearms, much as happened in the 1950s and '60s, where millions of M1 Garands and Carbines were surplussed. To Americans, I mean. We know that Biden was busy surplussing weapons to the Taliban.
