At its core, "prepping" is nothing more than "planned accommodation to variance from the norm;" how much variance is always the issue. I doubt that "normal stability" is the true default setting, if for no other reason than the definition of "normal stability" can vary so much for so many reasons, but the natural order of things does seem to work to minimize the degree of variance, at least over time.
