A Quick Run Around the Web -- November 23, 2016

Thomas Fearnley (1802-1842), Duck Hunter

  • Refugees in the news:
Over nine years, I witnessed the neighborhood become increasingly intolerant. Alcohol became unavailable in most shops and supermarkets; I heard stories of fanatics at the Comte des Flandres metro station who pressured women to wear the veil; Islamic bookshops proliferated, and it became impossible to buy a decent newspaper. With an unemployment rate of 30 percent, the streets were eerily empty until late in the morning. Nowhere was there a bar or café where white, black and brown people would mingle. Instead, I witnessed petty crime, aggression, and frustrated youths who spat at our girlfriends and called them “filthy whores.” If you made a remark, you were inevitably scolded and called a racist. There used to be Jewish shops on Chaussée de Gand, but these were terrorized by gangs of young kids and most closed their doors around 2008. Openly gay people were routinely intimidated, and also packed up their bags.

I finally left Molenbeek in 2014. It was not out of fear. The tipping point, I remember, was an encounter with a Salafist, who tried to convert me on my street. It boiled down to this: I could no longer stand to live in this despondent, destitute, fatalistic neighborhood.
    • Meanwhile, on the other side of the world: "Chinese police use a FLAMETHROWER on 'Muslim terror suspects' after grenades and tear gas fail to lure them from cave"--Daily Mail.
    • Solomon at SNAFU reports: "S-300's are being delivered to Iran..." He says: "Iran will not only get nuclear weapons but they'll have the means to protect them."
    • "Democrats' devious gun control measure"--American Thinker. Democrats are proposing to ban the purchase of firearms by anyone on the terror watch list or other similar lists. The problem: no one knows how you get added to the list, and it is near impossible to be removed from the list.
    • "Elites Versus the Masterminds"--Richard Fernandez. He points out that there was nothing very "masterful" about the attacks in Paris, and suggests that the only reason that the Eurocrats refer to the attacks as being planned by a "mastermind" is to cover their own incompetence. He writes: "The sad truth is that Western leaders are constantly outwitted not because their foes are so intelligent, but because they are so infernally dull."
    • The media claims that Donald Trump incorrectly stated that Muslims in New Jersey celebrated the 9/11 attack. Yet this September 18, 2001, article from the Washington Post reported: "In Jersey City, within hours of two jetliners' plowing into the World Trade Center, law enforcement authorities detained and questioned a number of people who were allegedly seen celebrating the attacks and holding tailgate-style parties on rooftops while they watched the devastation on the other side of the river." (H/t Powerline Blog).
    • "Ted Koppel and the Electric Grid"--American Thinker. Discussing the impact of an EMP attack:
There is plenty of food.  On June 1, 2015, corn stocks were 900 pounds for each inhabitant of the USA.  Just counting corn, there is enough food to feed everyone for 2 years.  Normally this corn is fed to livestock or turned into ethanol that is added to gasoline and burned in cars (a global warming boondoggle).  Corn is only the tip of the food iceberg.  There are 80 million cattle on the hoof.  There are large stocks of soybeans and wheat.
The problem is transportation, food preparation, and distribution – the food chain.  Poor people in Mexico have been living on a diet based on corn and beans for centuries.  For a few hundred dollars, it is possible to store, in a closet, everything needed to survive for months (see instructions here).  Having a closet of survival supplies probably won’t be much help if you live in a city where your neighbors are starving and perhaps freezing.
