No name or other identification of the driver that I've been able to find: the BBC says it was "a local man"; Reuters said it was a French man and his motive was unknown; the Independent repeated reports that the man wasn't on a list of radicals but had recently become radicalized; the Australian Broadcasting Company reported that the driver was "Oleron resident" and that police were looking into whether the man had been experiencing mental health issues; and Le Monde notes that "[w]hen he was arrested, the driver cried 'God is the greatest' in Arabic – an expression that is a key refrain in Islam, but also used by extremist militants when carrying out attacks – the prosecutor said, but added that the man's motive was not immediately clear." And that is what we call gaslighting.
